How can I become an
Optometris…?

Optometry is a medical field dedicated to helping patients correct and manage problems with their eyesight. Being an optometrist can mean helping people see better and improve their quality of life.

Being an optometrist can be a very rewarding career choice offering good pay, high lifetime earnings, the satisfaction of helping people improve their eye health. But it is not right for everybody.

However, potential pros and cons include the high cost of education, a competitive job market, and unlimited career pathways compared to other healthcare professions. The decision to pursue an optometry degree, diploma or certificate should be based on individual circumstances, career goals, and personal interests, considering both the benefits and challenges of the profession.

Few educational institutions offer the Optometry/ opticians courses in Sri Lankan.

School of Ophthalmic Technologist
Higher Diploma in ophthalmic technology

This course is design to fulfil the requirement of government hospital optometrist. The office of the School is presently functioning at the National Eye Hospital, Colombo, which is the main training center for ophthalmic technologists. School of Ophthalmic Technology, established in 1983 by the ministry of health at National Eye Hospital Colombo with the initiation of Dr. C E Parker III., honors the diploma in ophthalmic technology. However, a degree programme does not exist.

Duration: Fulltime 2 years

Entry Requirements: Sri Lankan GCE Advanced Level at one sitting in one and the same sitting.( credit pass for physics)

Bachelor of Science in Optometry

The goal of the programme is to produce a graduate with theoretical knowledge, clinical skills and professional training necessary to practice independently and successfully as an eye care professional in any part of the world. The program aims to produce optometry professionals who will provide quality services, foster education in Optometry and promote research in relevant fields, both nationally as well as internationally.

The BSc (Hons) in Optometry is a full-time degree program offered over twelve terms spanning four academic years of study. Each academic year comprises of three regular terms and each term is 10 weeks in duration.

Duration: Fulltime four years

Entry Requirements: Sri Lankan GCE Advanced Level at one sitting in one and the same sitting.

I. Foundation Course of optometry (SLOA)

This course has been designed for students with an ambition and interest to study optometry

Entry Qualifications.

Candidates who are successful in GCE A/L Bio science or physical science stream can directly apply for the foundation course or any person who has GCE A/L Qualification (Any Stream) with Credit passes for Maths, Science, and English with more than 2 years’ experience in the field as a dispensing optician also can apply with a recommendation of a full member of SLOA

Duration: 1 years

Basic Dispensing Optics (By Essilor Academy-India) - Sri Lanka Optometric Association

This course was design for the people who are working in optical environment as front office staff

Duration: 8 months

II. Higher National Diploma in Optometry

Entry Qualifications.

Candidate who successful in GCE A/L Bio science or physical science can directly apply higher national diploma.in optometry

Associate members with GCE A/L Qualification (Any Stream), with Credit passes for Maths, Science,and English with more than 70% marks in the foundation course of optometry, and with 3 years of experience with interest in optometry can apply for HNDO. (Will be closed this category in 2024)

2 ½ years (According to SLQF credit hours)
